Roberto Valdés

Since his debut concert at the age of seven, Mr. Valdés has been well regarded as a renowned soloist and chamber musician in America and Europe having performed the most important masterpieces of the Classical and Latin-American violin literature.

As a soloist, Mr. Valdés has collaborated with conductors such as Igor Yaroslavski, Miguel del Castillo, Sung Kwak, Alfredo Rugeles, J. Calabrese, Cristóbal Soler, Francesco Belli, Carlos Riazuelo e Max Ravinovitch among others. He has performed in venues such as Gran Teatro de La Habana, Teatro Amadeo Roldán, Teatro Teresa Carreño, Grand Hall of the Moscow State Conservatory, Liceu de Barcelona, Palau de la Música Valencia, Teatro Amira de la Rosa, Teatro Heredia, Miry Hall of the Conservatory Ghent, Teatro Comunale “G. D'annunzio”, Grande Auditório, Centro Cultural de Belém.

Mr. Valdés was the musical director of Conjunto de Cámara de la Habana (Cuba); musical and artistic director of Orquesta Filarmónica del Caribe (Colombia), Camarata Ensemble da Guarda and Camerata Ibero-Americana (Portugal); concertmaster of Orquesta Sinfónica de Valencia (Venezuela), Orquesta Sinfónica de Medellín (Colombia); and guest concertmaster of the opera season at Palau de la Música de Valencia (Spain).

During more than twenty years as a pedagogue, Mr. Roberto Valdés has worked as head of the string department of the Instituto Superior de Arte in Havana (Cuba) and the Conservatorio de Música de Valencia (Venezuela). He was a professor at the Academia Latinoamericana de Violín in Caracas (Venezuela) and the Universidad EAFIT in Medellín (Colombia). He has been invited to give master classes at the Universidad Simón Bolívar in Caracas (Venezuela); the summer course of the Academia Reina Sofía in Madrid (Spain); and the Universidad de Valencia (Spain). For more than fifteen years, Mr. Valdés has collaborated with Fundación del Estado para el Sistema Nacional de Orquestas Juveniles e Infantiles de Venezuela (FESNOJIV) as a violin teacher and music coach of the violinists of the Orquesta Sinfónica Simón Bolívar, incluiding Gustavo Dudamel, Diego Matheuz, Dietrich Paredes and Alejandro Carreño.

His students have been winners and laureates of important competitions such as Henryk Szering Violin Competition, Unión Nacional de Escritores y Artistas de Cuba (UNEAC), David Russell Competition, Concurso Internacional Luís Ángel Arango, International Violin Competition of Covilhã.

Roberto Valdés was born in Havana, Cuba. He obtained his Master's degree of Fine Arts at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory and the Gnesen Institute in Moscow where he studied with Sergei Kunakov, Zoria Shikhmurzayeva, Halida Akhtyamova, Dmitry Schebalin among others.

Currently, Roberto Valdés is professor at the Universidade de Aveiro, and the Escola Profissional de Música de Espinho (Portugal) and guest professor of Academia Latinoamericana de Violin in Caracas (Venezuela).
